Jen Cushman’s Deconstructed/Reconstructed Art Retreat
Hosted by Charity Wings Art and Craft Center
September 20-24, 2017
A fundamental skill of every mixed-media artist is the ability to see an object not for what it is but what it can become. Transforming common, useful objects takes a keen eye, a sensitive heart, an innovative mind and skilled hands. For the reimagined art to be beautiful it takes knowledge, some talent and a thread of resonance for both the artist and the viewer. I have honed all of the above and I want to share my skills with you in my brand new Deconstructed/Reconstructed Art Retreat.
This is not your normal art retreat where the instructor created a specific set of projects for you to complete. This is an intimate retreat where we’ll be looking at found objects in a new light and deciding on the spot (using your gut instincts and unique aesthetic) what you want them to become. I will show you how to get there by teaching you the fundamental how-to skills of either taking the object down to its bones or simply enhancing its natural beauty – it all depends on the object and what you see for it in your mind’s eye. I will also teach how to reconstruct the object into something entirely new, mostly using cold-connection techniques of drilling, creating new attachment points and pulling it all together. At the end of this retreat, you’ll think like an artist and an engineer.
We’ll also be talking a lot about the essential element nearly every piece of great art embodies – storytelling. You will create work that resonates with your heart and soul. We want our objects to not only look good but make us feel good.
